About FunderKit
FunderKit is a foundation research platform built for small nonprofits. We analyze publicly available IRS 990 filings to help you find grantmaking foundations that are most likely to fund organizations like yours.
The Problem
Small nonprofits spend thousands of dollars on grant consulting to identify potential funders. Many rely on expensive databases or word-of-mouth to find foundations that might support their work. The information is public — it just hasn't been easy to access.
Our Approach
Every private foundation in the United States files a Form 990-PF with the IRS each year. These filings contain detailed information about grants awarded, officer compensation, financial trends, and giving patterns. FunderKit processes these filings to build comprehensive profiles of grantmaking foundations.
We analyze giving history, geographic focus, grant size ranges, grantee types, and trends over time. This lets you quickly identify foundations whose giving patterns align with your organization.
What You Can Do
- Search foundations by name, state, or NTEE category
- View detailed profiles with giving history, grant recipients, officers, and financial trends
- Browse by state to find foundations in your area
- Browse by category to find foundations aligned with your mission
Data Quality
All data on FunderKit comes from official IRS filings. We process raw XML returns published through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS) system. For more details on our data pipeline and analysis methods, see our methodology and data sources pages.
